Switch from C: Year Make Model to ViewForge

C: Year Make Model alternative for Shopify — the $10 plan is not the plan you need

C: Year Make Model is a capable app and its Basic plan is the cheapest million fitment rows on the App Store. It is also dropdowns and imports and nothing else. The fitment badge, the saved garage and the compatibility chart — the three things that actually cut wrong-part returns — start at $50 a month. ViewForge includes all three on the free plan.

Switching from C: Year Make Model

The app is fine. The tier is the problem.

Their dropdowns are not the limitation

Worth clearing up first, because the name invites the assumption: C: Year Make Model is not automotive-only. Their Basic plan lists unlimited YMM fields, their listing covers bikes, boats, printers, cartridges, tires, wheels, audio and HVAC, and their documentation walks through building dropdowns like Printer Brand / Series / Model. Adding a non-car product line does not force you off it. If you came here expecting a schema wall, there is not one — the reason to look elsewhere is the price ladder.

What $10 actually buys

Their Basic tier is genuinely good value and no comparison page should pretend otherwise. You get the cascading dropdowns, unlimited fields, bulk product assignment, universal products, CSV import with year-range expansion, and a million fitment rows for $10 a month. On raw row volume at that price, nothing in this category beats it. If dropdowns and a big import are the whole job, that plan does the whole job.

The three features you probably came for are $50

Fitment Match, the Fitment Compatibility Chart and My Garage do not appear on Basic. All three first appear on Pro, at $50 a month — a fivefold jump. Those are the parts of a fitment system that reduce wrong-part returns rather than just filtering a collection: the badge that tells a shopper this fits my truck on the product page, the chart that lists what else it fits, and the saved vehicle that survives the next visit. ViewForge includes all three on the free plan and carries them through every paid tier.

And their free plan will not run on your store

Their $0 plan is labelled for development stores and states it will not work with a paid Shopify plan. That is a sandbox, not a free tier — you cannot leave a small catalog on it. There is a 7-day trial on the paid plans, which is fair, but seven days is an evaluation window rather than a place to sit. ViewForge Free runs on a live store, permanently, up to 50 products with fitment.

Smart Parse, which they do not have

C: Year Make Model imports tabular data well and reads nothing else. If your fitment lives inside titles like "Fits 2015–2019 Ford Focus SE", the route in is retyping it into a spreadsheet first. Smart Parse on the $49 Professional tier extracts it from the product copy directly, with a confidence score per record so you review the uncertain ones instead of all of them. Different tool, different job — and the one place where the gap is capability rather than pricing.

Price the tier you will actually be on.

Basic at $10 is dropdowns and imports. The fitment badge, the saved garage and the compatibility chart all start at their $50 Pro tier — ViewForge includes all three on the free plan, and their free plan will not run on a paid Shopify store.

C: Year Make Model alternative — frequently asked questions

Is C: Year Make Model automotive only?

No. Its Basic plan includes unlimited YMM fields, and its App Store listing covers vehicles, bikes, cars, boats, printers, cartridges, tires, wheels, audio systems and air conditioning. Its documentation shows building custom dropdowns such as Printer Brand / Series / Model. The practical difference against ViewForge is that ViewForge ships eight vertical templates preconfigured, where C: Year Make Model gives you empty fields to define yourself.

Should I switch from C: Year Make Model to ViewForge?

It depends which of their tiers you need. If dropdowns and CSV import are the whole requirement, their $10 Basic plan is good value and switching buys you little. If you want the fitment badge on the product page, the compatibility chart or a saved garage, those start at their $50 Pro tier — ViewForge includes all three on its free plan, and at $19/month for 1,000 products.

What does C: Year Make Model cost compared to ViewForge?

C: Year Make Model is $10/month Basic, $50/month Pro and $75/month Premium, with annual pricing about 20% lower. ViewForge is free for the first 50 products with fitment, with no expiry, then $19/month for 1,000 products, $49/month for 5,000 plus Smart Parse, and $240/month for unlimited. The comparison that matters is not $10 against $19 — it is $50 against free, because that is the tier where their fitment badge, compatibility chart and saved garage first appear.

Does C: Year Make Model have a free plan?

It has a $0 Development plan, but it is restricted to development stores and its own listing states it will not work with a paid Shopify plan. It is capped at 100 YMM rows and 5 fields. Paid plans carry a 7-day free trial. ViewForge Free runs on a live store with no expiry, up to 50 products with fitment, and includes the fitment badge, saved garage and product-page compatibility table.

What does ViewForge do that C: Year Make Model does not?

Four things. Smart Parse, which extracts fitment from product titles and descriptions rather than requiring a spreadsheet. Confidence scoring and fuzzy matching on import, so ambiguous records are flagged for review. VIN decode, on the $240/month Premium tier. And storage as Shopify metaobjects, so the fitment data lives in your store rather than a vendor database. ViewForge also ships eight vertical templates preconfigured rather than blank fields.

How do I migrate from C: Year Make Model to ViewForge?

Export your fitment rows as CSV from their dashboard, install ViewForge, and map the columns in the importer. ViewForge writes the records as Shopify metaobjects, so from that point the data is in your store rather than a vendor database. Verify with the coverage dashboard, then uninstall the old app. Most catalogs at this size finish in well under an afternoon.

Bottom line

C: Year Make Model is not a weak app, and it is not automotive-only — you can build a printer or a wheel-spec hierarchy in it, and at $10 for a million rows it is the cheapest way to run one. The question was never capability. It is where the line sits. Theirs puts the fitment badge, the saved garage and the compatibility chart at $50 a month, and its free plan will not run on a paid Shopify store at all. Ours puts all three at zero for the first 50 products. Price the tier you will actually be on, not the one on the front of the listing. see ViewForge →
